Sybil the Clairvoyant Projection Effect

Better than Madame Leota,
Sybil the Clairvoyant is a professional quality projection effect kit that anyone with access to a video projector can do. You simply project the DVD onto the included head form, and watch your guests become completely mesmerized by this incredible illusion.  Sybil conducts a séance that's sure to impress.

Watch the demo video below to see all the cool, creepy effects, and scroll down a little further for the how-to video for more information about how to set up and display Sybil.

A lot of careful visual effects work and animation went into this effect to eliminate most of the problems with typical facial projection effects.

NEW: Thinking Outside the Box and Using a Cheap Projector for Sybil:

  1. Hi. Do you have any suggestions for reducing the projector hotspot on the globe? Jay

    1. Hi Jay,
That's one that Disney hasn't even solved. As far as I've been able to figure out, in order to not have the projection source reflect on the globe, you'd either have to mask the source, so the globe can't "see" it (which you can't do, because then you'd also block the projection from hitting the face), or make the globe nonreflective (which you can't do, because then the globe would no longer be clear, and image would land on it instead of (or in addition to) the face).

The simple trick, however, is just to have a number of other light sources in the room (such as LED candles in front of the globe, spotlights around the room) to camouflage the projector reflection by adding other reflections.

But even if you do nothing, I've found most people still won't be able to figure out how the effect works. :)

    1. A few folks have had success with this one: http://www.lightbulbsurplus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_183_656_893&products_id=2893
The company will even cut the opening to 9" for you if you ask. I'm told you can find a $5 off coupon online, too.

  3. Heya!

Regarding the larger projector, what brand/model is it?

    1. It's an old Sharpvision model, long out of production. The important thing when looking at regular projector models is to find one that's at least 1000 lumens with plenty of bulb life. Projectorcentral.com is a great resource.

    1. The first video on this page shows the routine in its entirety. It's a little over two minutes. There is only one routine, currently.

  7. Hi, Do you need an opening of at least 9" in diameter to accommodate the head included in the kit? Want to make sure before placing the order. The pre-cut size is 5.25". Thank you.

    1. 9" is a good size. The head form measures 7" wide, to give a frame of reference.

  8. Any tips on how you created the ghosts in the background? I'd love to be able to create my own and expand that with a section of flying ghosts on scrim overhead.

    1. You can use either 14" or 16". The example above is in a 14" globe, but the ones I will be selling (globe and base) in the next few weeks are 16". You can see what those will looks like here: http://chickenhaunt.blogspot.com/2014/07/making-crystal-ball-for-sybil-part-2.html

  11. Hello Mr. Chicken
I am interested in purchasing your Sybil kit. However, I would like to purchase my own projector. I was wondering if you could recommend a projector (LED) that could be remotely turned on and off with a prop controller? Or conversely does your animation show an immobile face until triggered? or does it have a time delay included between scenes?

    1. Hi there, I'm not aware of a projector that's triggerable as you describe. The projection is a continuous loop without delay, but you could modify it if you wanted to. Shoot me an email at ChickenHaunt [at] gmail.com if you'd like to discuss it further.

  12. hi there would a 16 globe with a 6" opening be big enough to fit the face in your kit along with a wig?? Thanks so much I love this

    ReplyDelete

    1. The face is a full sized face, so I suggest a 9"-10" opening. Many places that sell the globes will cut different sized openings for you at no cost.

    2. Thank you much for the fast reply...also sorry one more question, the dvd that comes in the kit..would that transfer to a sim card or is the format too big???

    3. I don't know about SIM cards, but I know you'll have no problem getting it on an SD card. I don't know th exact file size offhand, but it's well under 1gb.
